Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway
Auburn Ca.
Michael Kirby Story and Photos
Week three at the Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway brought the return of the Extreme Sidecars to the tricky dirt oval in Auburn Ca. The Extreme Sidecars are a crowd favorite at Fast Friday’s and fans pack the stadium to watch these high octane three-wheeled racing teams. Five teams made the trip to Fast Friday’s for the first round of the series. The Extreme Sidecars will make five appearances this season at Fast Friday’s including the AMA Extreme Sidecar National Championship later this season on September 26.
Friday night the five teams that filled the roster in round one of the series were 2022 AMA National Extreme Sidecar Champions Robert Curry and Laurie Curry, Ace Kale and Brent Smith, Matt Walters and Jonny Estrada, Wade Boyd and Joshua Bustos, Kevin Kale and Jennifer Hernandez.
This round was won by the team of Boyd and Bustos. The Curry’s looked to have the night sewn up with dominate wins in all of their heat races leading up to the main event running out of the far outside lane five. But you can never tell about racing and the reason fans attend is to see the unexpected and that is what happened Friday night. Boyd and Bustos are strong competitors. In heat one they had mechanical troubles in the first heat and did not finish. In the next heat races they had three third place finishes in heats two, three and four.
The team of Kevin Kale and Jennifer Hernandez looked to definitely have a shot at a main event win with second place finishes in their first four heat races, but as the five teams rolled to the start line of the main event nothing was certain. These teams sit on 1000cc three-wheeled very unique motorcycles. One rider is the pilot and the other is the passenger or monkey. The monkey swings from side to side balancing off the rear of the trike. They ride in the opposite direction of the speedway two-wheeled racing. The bikes are big and with two riders on each machine and five teams there is not much room when they are fighting for space on the track or in turn one. It is very exciting to watch and fans are fanatical about this form of racing.
In the main right out of the gate in lane three right in the center of the five teams Boyd and Bostos got a good gate and took the lead that no other teams could touch. A. Kale and Smith were out of gate one and fell into the chase behind Boyd and Bustos hotly in pursuit with the Curry’s right behind them. It was touch and go but Boyd and Bustos held their position and no other teams could catch them. This was the final finishing order. Boyd and Bustos were first, Kale and Smith were second and the Curry’s were third. Walters and Estrada finished fourth followed by K. Kale and Hernandez. It was a great and fantastic sidecar program.
Absent from the line-up of sidecar racers though was Joe Jones. Jones held numerous national championships and actively promoted all phases sidecar racing. Rolling out on the track in his patriotic painted racing machine adorned with the big #1, Jones was a master sidecar pilot. The racing community lost Jones in a tragic accident last October. Jones was a great racer and promoter of sidecar racing, and just a wonderful human being, husband and father. A touching remembrance was presented in Jones’ honor before the first sidecar race opened the evening. Commemorative embroidered key rings with the message “#BELIKEJOE! were passed out to patrons as a keepsake to remember Jones by. Joe is gone but will not be forgotten by the racing community. He is missed by all who life’s he touched.
Broc Nicol was again on the winners podium, winning the scratch main event. It was his second scratch main event of the season. Billy Janniro, the only other rider to win a scratch main event this season was second. Wilbur was third and Darren Armbruster was fourth. Nicol had two second finishes to transfer to the main event. It was a two-person race between Nicol and Janniro but Nicol had a great gate and led the entire race to the finish line.
Armbruster seems to have found his groove in the handicap program. Last week Armbruster picked up his first handicap main event win and repeated this week with another win. In week one he started on the zero line and this week he was moved back to the 10-yard line and still won. A four rider crash in turn one necessited a restart by referee Steve Lucero in the main event. On the restart Armbruster still was able to hold off all comers and win the race. Janniro was second and Wilbur Hancock was third. Looks like Armbruster will be checking out the dirt on the 20-yard line next week.
In the Support D2 division young fireball rider Catherine Moore had won the last two main events and she looked like she would add a third to her resume but she took and hard fall in lap two of the main event. After a time on laying on the track she got to her feet, was shaken up a bit, and borrowing her brother Greg Moore’s bike rolled to start line for the restart. But, it was not to be this week though and John Gauthreaux picked up his first main event win of the season. Antonio Coffman was second and Ray Holt Jr. was third in the main.
Jeff Schoestein was first in the Support D3 division, Sean McAndrew was second and Cody Baugh was third. The main event was marred by a crash that took three riders down but in the restart Schoestein prevailed.
The youth program is alive and well with many enthusiastic young up and coming riders eager on compete on Fast Friday’s tricky dirt oval. There are five youth divisions, six if you count the pee-wees.
In the Youth 250cc D1 main event brothers Wesley and Riley Rearick collided 10-yards out of the gate and both riders went down. After the bikes were untangled, fenders and exhaust pipes straightened , referee Steve Lucero called for a restart with Riley Rearick penalized 10-yards. It went smoother in the restart with Wesley Rearick winning the main event, his second in a row. Riley Rearick was second and Caden Carvikas was third. Leeann Emerson was first in the Youth 250cc D2 main event, Baylee Evans-Seeley was second and Colton Cooper was third.
In the Youth 150cc D1 main event, Zander Schroeder was first, his first main win of the season. Liam Falcon was second and Brady Wills was third. Chance Farrow won the Youth 150cc D2 main event, also his first main event win of the season. Ryder Faria was second and Dexter Orlando was third. In the Youth 150cc D3 main event it was Kaiden Boyd-Bews who won this week. The win was his second main event win in two weeks. William Bruce was second and Kaydence Craw was third.
Looking to next week June 12, along with the first-class speedway racing, round two of the season long grudge match Team Challenge will continue. Team Law Tigers leads Team IFC 12-6. Look for Team IFC to come out swinging to add points to their score. The great racing action continues each week at Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway. “The place to be on Friday nights.”
