Auburn California is the home to many endurance events and has earned the moniker “The Endurance Capital of the World.” It is home to many races that are staged in the canyons, foothills, lakes and river areas that surround this picturesque area. This weekend the epic Tevis Cup 100 mile ride on horses will start at daybreak Saturday August 1 in Truckee Ca. and end 100 miles later in the very same arena that Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway racing takes place.

Fast Fridays is not to be left out of these challenges and stages their own version of a different kind endurance event that tests the skills of each speedway rider on a motorcycle. The 25-lap handicap main event is a test of strength and endurance not often seen on a race track.

The rider that outlasts all the others is crowned Fast Friday’s “Iron Man.” It is quite a feat for not only the rider but also the speedway motorcycles. Bikes are normally equipped with a gas tank that holds enough fuel for a four or six lap race. Riders try all types of modifications to carry enough fuel to finish the 25-lapper. The handicaps are doubled for each rider, some starting as far back as the 80-yard line.

This years winner proved youth plays a big part of this event and that this event is really a young man’s game. Upcoming speedway star Brady Landon, who is just a week shy of his sixteenth birthday, blazed through the 25-laps to take this years win. Landon becomes the youngest winner of this event at Fast Fridays, a year younger than last years winner Darren Armbruster.

Seven riders lined up at various handicaps around the track for the night’s finale. Louie Mersaroli, who is back racing at Fast Fridays after a two-year break and won three of four 25-lap races before his absence, took the lead racing off the 40-yard line and was considered a favorite.

In what seemed like just seconds, Landon was right behind him moving through the lower yardage riders and was right behind him. Slowly a rider here and there coasted into the center of the track unable to finish, but Mersaroli, and Landon were and now joined by Wilbur Hancock and Broc Nicol wanting a piece of the action.

As the laps went by and Fast Fridays starter Shawn Jay had the difficult job of counting the them, the race tightened up. Mersaroli still led Landon but it was close with Landon right behind him. Then on lap 23 Mersaroli ran out of fuel leaving him stalled on the track. Landon who had installed a larger fuel tank on his bike took the lead and won the race. Nicol had kept up and took second-place and Hancock took third.

Landon also doubled-up again this week again winning the scratch main event just a few races before he won the marathon handicap 25-lap race. This is repeat of his races last week at Fast Fridays. In the scratch main event Landon faced familiar foes lining up with Broc Nicol, Louie Mersaroli and Billy Janniro. Out of gate four Landon had the jump on everyone and took the lead ahead of Janniro who spun wide and lost ground to Nicol who took over second-place behind Landon. It was a tight race from then on between Landon and Nicol but Landon held on for a close finish win. Nicol was second, Mersaroli was third and Janniro fourth.

Landon now has three scratch main event wins and three handicap main event wins so far this season. It was a stunning night for the young speedster who is on a 500cc motorcycle for his first season. It also is a glimpse into what the future holds for this talented speedway rider.

Cody Baugh won the Support D2 main event. Baugh was undefeated the D2 division and ran away with the main event for the win. It was real close for second and third-place, but Marc Denniston was second at the tapes just barely edging out third-place finisher Antonio Coffman. It was the first win for Baugh in this division. In the Support D3 division it was Sean McAndrew who took the checkered flag. After numerous top three finishes McAndrew was able to stand on the winners podium. Tim Dion was second and LC Veale was third.

Jameson Hutchinson was first again in the Youth 250cc main event. The win was the sixth of the season for Hutchinson. Hutchinson fell in one of his heat races finishing third but recovered to come back and win the main event. Wesley Rearick was a close second and Caden Cavrikas was third. In the Youth 250cc D2 main event Leeann Emerson who has won six main events and three in a row uncharacteristically took a tumble to the track and did not finish the race. That left the door open for Colton Cooper to win the main event. Leala Farrow finished second and Baylee Evan-Seeley was third.

Luke Seeger won the Youth 150cc D1 main event, his first main event win since moving up to the Youth 150cc D1 division. Zander Schroeder was second and Brady Wills was third. In his first race in the Youth 150cc D2 division Kaiden Boyd-Bews won the main event. Boyd-Bews was undefeated Friday night in this division. Chance Farrow was second and Dexter Orlando was third. Kaydence Craw was first in the Youth 150cc D3 main event, she was also undefeated in her division. William Bruce was second and Mason Latham was third.

Hold on to your hats because round three of the Extreme Sidecars will be at Fast Fridays next Friday night August 7. These guys are wild on their three-wheeled motorcycles with a rider hanging off the back as the speed around the track. It must be seen to be believed and racing that is not to be missed.
