Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway
Auburn Ca.
Michael Kirby Story and Photos
Speedway racing at Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn Ca. moved its race nights to Saturdays beginning this week and kicked off the championship racing portion of their season. This week it was the Fast Fridays Division I, Support Class and Peewee Track Championships.
In Division I the top 16 riders scored points during the season accumulating points each week and were seeded into 20 scratch races so each rider rode against the other riders at least once. It was a championship racing format with riders scoring points for finishing order in the event races. Three points for a win, two points for a second-place finish, one point for third and zero points for a fourth-place finish. The rider with the most points at the end of the evening would be the track champion, no semi-final or final races.
Billy Janniro was the Fast Friday’s season points winner with 1683 points, followed by Bart Bast with 1530 points and Charlie Trana with 1448 points. Janniro continued his winning ways by also winning the 2024 Fast Fridays Track Championship Saturday night. Janniro scored 13 points leading all riders and claiming the championship outright dropping just two points thru the 20 heats.
Battling a back injury from three unfortunate mishaps racing on the track over the last three weeks he was able to solider on and pick-up the track championship. Barely able to put on his shoes just days ago and walking with the help of a cane last week, Janniro pulled it together for the track championship, “I think my injury was a combination of injures from the three crashes I was involved recently and maybe I am just getting older,” he said.
Second place required a run-off because Timmy Dion and Broc Nicol each earned 12 points dropping just three points each in heat races. The results of the top three might have been different had Nicol not of missed his plane flight from Southern California to Sacramento and missed the first round of heat races. Rules say there needs to be a runoff for second and third, so they ran a 21st race just the two of them which Nicol won for second place. Dion was third in the track championship.
Russell Green played the spoiler for Janniro in heat 18 winning a very good race and taking a perfect night from Janniro. Green finished first and Janniro dropped his two points from perfect with a third-place finish. Alex Martin picked up a second-place finish and two more points in that race. The final race, heat 20 included a crash with all four riders going down in turn one. The riders included Timmy Dion, Rees Todd, Antonio Coffman and Greg Moore. It looked really bad, but all the riders were up in minutes and after checking out the bikes were back for a restart. Dion came out on top of that race followed by Todd, Moore and Coffman in that order.
In the Support Class the eight top points winners during the season raced in two races with the top two finishers in each race transferring to a main event for the championship. John Peters, who was racing in both Division I and the Support Class programs along with Antonio Coffman who was also racing in both divisions each won their heat race to transfer to the main along with and Brian Leventon. Peters got an early lead and won the support main event and won the 2024 Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway Support Class Championship. Antonio Coffman was second and Brian Leventon was third.
The Peewee championship was a crowd pleaser. The peewees are very popular with Fast Friday fans and they put on a great program Saturday night. The peewees ran the same championship program as the Division I riders did, scoring points in four heat races to transfer into a consolation race and the top four riders transferred to the peewee main event. Liam Falcon, who seemed to be the man to beat this season in the peewee division prevailed Saturday with two wins in his heat races then topped his night with the main event win. Logan Kerr who has given Falcon a run for his money each week finished second and William Bruce finished third.
On the podium the boys all had smiles on their faces as they stood next to their trophies that were as nearly as tall as they were. Families snapped photos that will for sure end up in their scrapbooks, it was a very special night for these young racers.
Fast Fridays goes dark next week Saturday August 24 with no races then the championship racing picks back up again on August 31 with the AMA Extreme Sidecar National Championship and the AMA National Youth 250 and Youth 150 national championships.
