Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway opened their championship season Saturday night in Auburn Ca. All races will now be on Saturday nights for the remainder of the 2023 season. With the opening of the championship season Saturday night Fast Fridays ran three very exciting programs; the 2023 Fast Fridays Track Championship, the 2023 Pee Wee Championship and the Team Challenge Championship. Twenty-one Division I races, three Division II races, three Division III races, eight Pee Wee races and two team challenge heats. A total of 37 fantastic championship caliber speedway events.
Division I ran a championship format with 16 riders in 20 heats scoring points three for a win, two for a second-place finish, three for third place and zero for fourth place. The track champion was the rider with the most points after all the heat races. The races were all scratch contests and each rider faced all the other riders at least once. The top sixteen riders who accumulated points during the regular season made the line-up for the championship. These races were extremely fast, a quick four laps heats each lasting well under a minute.
When the dust settled Broc Nicol, a Southern California rider who has made the trip north each week came, out on top in Division I winning the 2023 Fast Fridays Track Championship. Nicol was nearly perfect, dropping just one point to Blake Borello in heat nine finished with 14 points. In second place was Dillon Ruml, another Southern California rider who dropped just two points finishing with 13 points. Billy Janniro finished in third place after a run-off with Louie Mersaroli who finished fourth after each finished with 12 points.
Division II and Division III ran a little different program with the top eight season points riders making the championship. They rode in two heat races transferring the first and second place finishers to a main event. Aidan McNutt was the Division II champion winning his heat race and the main event. Sammy Tetrault was second and Chase Kangas was third. In Division III Cody Aker won track championship. Aker was also had a perfect night winning his heat race then transferring to the main for the championship win. Catherine Moore, who finished first in Division III season points was second and Brian Leventon was third.
Riley Rearick was the Pee Wee Division Track Champion. Rearick, also is well known at at Fast Fridays as a Youth 150 rider along with his brother Wesley. Rearick 9, is young enough to compete in the Pee Wee division and will also be in the hunt in the AMA Youth 150 National Championship on September 2. Logan Kerr was second and Liam Falcon was third. The Pee Wee’s scored points in six heats with the top three riders seeded in the main event. A last chance heat transferred the top three finishers also to the main event for the championship for a total of eight races in their program.
The Team Challenge finished their season long grudge match in an exciting last championship round. The challenge had five rounds throughout the regular season with the teams scoring points in each round. Going into the final championship round Team Law Tigers led Team M-45 27-33. Down six points Team M-45 was able to take advantage of the Joker rule doubling the points of Broc Nicol who won his race and with another point scored by teammate Blake Borello added seven points to their score in one race. Team Law Tigers added two points to their tally with a second-place finish by Billy Janniro. The score now Law Tigers 35 M-45 34 making the last race very important. Louie Mersaroli won the last race for the Law Tigers adding three points and teammate Glen Moore chipped in one more with a third-place finish. For M-45 Dan Faria’s second place finish and his two points were just not enough to catch the Law Tigers and the final score ended up Team Law Tigers over Team M-45 39-36, a very close finish to a season long exciting series.
As the championship season continues at Fast Fridays all races will be on Saturday nights. The next race will be on Saturday September 2 when the AMA National Sidecar Championship and the AMA National Speedway Youth 250 and Youth 150 championships take place. There will be no races on August 26.
