Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway
Auburn Ca.
Michael Kirby Story and Photos
Broc Nicol had a very good night at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway Saturday. Making the trip to Auburn from Southern California as he has so many weeks this season Nicol held on to his national championship title and he will continue to sport the AMA National Speedway Championship number one on the back of his leathers and on the front of his speedway bike. Nicol repeated his championship win last year and had a nearly perfect night in the third round of the 2025 championship series outscoring all the riders and winning two of the three national championship rounds-rounds one and two.
His only misstep in the third round of the series came in the AMA Grand Final, the final race of the night and of the series when he dropped his only point of the evening to past AMA National Speedway Champion Max Ruml finishing second to Ruml. It was one of the best races of the evening that saw 11-time AMA National Speedway Champion Billy Janniro go into the wall coming out of turn two after bumping into Nicol nearing the straightaway. Janniro slammed into the wall and was slow to get up and dust himself off with the help of emergency personnel and other riders including Nicol. Janniro walked off the track under his own power but was excluded from the restart by referee Steve Lucero.
On a borrowed motorcycle Nicol rolled to the start line in lane four with Ruml in lane one and Slater Lightcap in lane two for the restart. In the restart as the tapes went up Ruml got an excellent gate and was in command from the start and led the entire race with Nicol giving chase but unable to catch him watching Ruml from behind as he won the race. Nicol was second, and Slater Lightcap was third. It was a great race and the scenario that played out will be remembered by race fans for years to come. Think about it, in the Grand Final there was one current AMA National Speedway Champion (Nicol), two past AMA National Speedway champions (Ruml and Janniro) and one other veteran rider, third place in points in all three of the series meetings (Lightcap). Who could ask for a better line up?
Though Nicol was the high scorer in round three of the series the winner of the grand final is winner of the final race which went to Ruml. Behind him was Nicol who took second for round three and Lightcap who was third in round three.
The championship series consisted of three separate meetings, two in Southern California at the City of Industry track and the final meeting at Fast Friday’s in Auburn Saturday night. Nicol won both the previous meetings and came into the final with 40 points and a slim lead of one point over Ruml who brought 39 points to the final. Billy Janniro came in with 28 points and a chance of winning the championship if everything went extremely well.
The way the championship points are scored is the 16 top racers compete in 20 heat races scoring points for finishing positions. All the riders will face each other at least once and at the end of the 20 heat races the top eight riders in points will then go into two semi-finals heats with the top two finishers in the semi-finals advancing to the Grand Final which will determine the winner of round. Points continue to accumulate in both semi-final heats toward the championship series but after that the winner of the championship round is determined by the finishing order of the grand finale. The series is a month’s long journey while the season continues with regular season races at various tracks.
Nicol was the high scorer in round three with 20 points dropping just the one point. Ruml was second with 18 points for round three. Lightcap was third in round three with 15 points. Nicol was the high points leader and champion for the entire series with 60 points overall. Ruml was second with 57 points, Lightcap was third with 41 points and Janniro was fourth with 38 points.
It was a fantastic night of crowd-pleasing championship racing in Auburn Ca. Along with the championship program Fast Friday’s also ran a Youth 250cc division program, a Youth 150cc program and also the ever-popular pee-wee’s program.
In the Youth 250cc D1 division newly crowned AMA Youth 250cc National Speedway Champion Brady Landon continued his winning ways with another main event win and a perfect night with wins in his heat races and the main event. In heat eight of their division Landon was seriously challenged though by Jameson Hutchinson, who has struggled with a way to beat Landon all season long. Hutchinson got the jump on Landon and led him for three of the four lap race only to have Landon gain ground on each lap and to catch him just before the finish line in an exciting finish. In the Youth 250 D2 division Justin Gist won the main event and Baylee Evans-Seeley was second.
Liam Falcon led the Youth 150cc D1 division with a win in the main event followed by Mason Howell in second and Brady Wills in third. Hank Hanaway was first in the Youth 150cc D2 main event, his second in a row. Second was Leeann Emerson. Dexter Orlando topped the Youth 150cc D3 main event with a first-place finish followed by Chance Farrow in second and William Bruce in third.
Just a reminder that there will be no races next week Saturday September 27 as the staff at Fast Fridays prepares for the final race of the season. Fast Fridays always saves the best for last and this season is no exception as the annual international grudge match USA vs. The World returns to Auburn. Six professional European racers come to town and face off with six of our best professional racers. A very popular meeting and always exciting. A great way to finish a great season of speedway racing.
