Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway
Auburn Ca.
Michael Kirby Story and Photos
Continuing the championship programs at Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway this season it was the Speedway’s Best Pairs Championship this week at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn Ca. A unique racing format, not really run often in American speedway but very popular, the staff at Fast Fridays brought six pairs of division one racers for 18 heats of scratch team racing.
Similar to regular speedway racing but different in that the racers on each team are not racing for individual points but team points that are added up throughout the heats and the team with the most points at the end of the 18 heat races are the champions. Also, different is that the racers are working together with each other as a team to accumulate points by helping each other during the four lap races. Which means that in some cases the riders might give up a chance to win the race dropping back to block or help his partner to secure a better finishing position and a higher score. Same bikes, same riders, same track conditions, all scratch racing just working with a partner.
The scoring is the familiar championship scoring with the winner of a race awarded three points, second place two points, third place one point and fourth no points. Two pairs-four riders race in each heat in each in different starting gate position throughout the evening and each team facing all the teams at least once during the championship.
The teams for this seasons pairs championship were the So-Cal boys Broc Nicol and Wilbur Hancock, Billy Janniro and Darren Armbruster, the Dion brothers-Timmy and Anthony, Danny Faria and Greg Moore, Rees Todd and Will “The Thrill” McCloskey and Tisiah Prout and Sammy Tetrault, all familiar names racing at Fast Fridays each week. This week though they are working with each other in teams.
As the racing got going it was clear that Nicol who leads 2025 AMA National Speedway Championship series after two meetings by two points was looking at this for a tune up for the third round of the championship series which will be staged at Fast Fridays next Saturday September 20. Nicol was unbeatable and scored three points in all his races for a perfect night and 18 points. Not to be left out his partner Hancock tallied another 10 points bringing their total score to 28 for the night and the championship. Nicol is pretty good at this kind of racing and this seasons championship is a repeat of last season when he also took home the pairs championship with partner Charlie Trana.
Right behind Nicol and Hancock was the team of Janniro and Armbruster. In the first heat riding against Nicol and Hancock Janniro took a spill in turn three on the first lap and had to roll off into the infield carding a zero for that heat but Armbruster did pick up a second place finish and two points for their team. If that had not happened the score and the outcome of the evening could have been much different. But that’s racing and Janniro and Armbruster ended the evening with 24 points for second place just four points behind Nicol and Hancock. Third place went to the team of Todd and McCloskey who combined for 19 points. In the last heat race Todd and McCloskey put on a very good show of team racing, working together with Todd dropping back a little blocking and giving McCloskey some protection so they could pick first and second place finishes in the final heat.
The team of Faria and Moore finished fourth with 18 points and had a great race in heat five picking up five points using fantastic team racing skills blocking and protecting for each other to get first and second places. In fifth place was team Dion, Timmy and Anthony. Not only teammates but also brothers, they combined for 13 points. Sixth place finishers were Tetrault and Prout who tallied six points.
Also on the program was the Youth 150cc division races. In the Youth 150cc D1 division newly crowned 2025 AMA Youth 150cc National Champion Mason Howell came out on top winning the main event. Howell was perfect winning his both his heat races and then the main event. Liam Falcon was second and Brady Wills was third.
Hank Hanaway topped the Youth 150cc D2 main event, winning his first heat race then finishing second in his second heat race, then he went on to win the main event. Gavin Evan-Seeley was second and Ryder Faria was third. In the Youth 150cc D3 main event it was Chance Farrow who was first in their main event. Farrow was second in both his heat races but pulled it together to win the main event. William Bruce was second and Dexter Orlando was third.
Jameson Hutchinson was first in the Youth 250cc main event. Hutchinson was on fire and won all his heat races then cruised to a win in the main event. Caden Cavrikas was second and Baylee Evan-Seeley was third. Rounding out the program was of course the always popular Pee-wees riding three heat races.
A fantastic night of racing showcasing riders usually working against each other racing unselfishly as team members.
Be sure to mark you calendars for the exciting racing coming up at Fast Friday’s. On Saturday September 20 the third final round of the 2025 AMA National Speedway Championship will take place. After two rounds down south the best riders in the nation will finish the series in Auburn and a new champion will be crowned. On October 4 the 2025 Fast Friday’s season will finish strong with the USA vs. World finale. Fast Friday’s staff is busy lining up some great world talent to cross the oceans to come to Auburn to run up against our best racers in the annual international event. One of the most popular events of the season and a great way to end the season.
