Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway
Auburn Ca.
Michael Kirby Story and Photos
Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn Ca. has reached the portion of their season when championship racing has begun. Beginning this week, the first week of championships kicked off on the famed tricky dirt oval in the Gold Country Fairgrounds. The first championship of the season was the final championship round of the season long Team Challenge. The Team Challenge pits two teams racing in pairs, three heats each round and scoring accumulating each round. Three points for a first place finish, two points for a second place finish, one point for third place and zero for a fourth place finish. The teams race in pairs helping their teammates to gather points.
Coming into the final the Law Tigers held a comfortable lead of 48-42 over Team IFC, but for sure did not have it in the bag with many possibilities for Team IFC catch Team Law Tigers in the final round. Being six points down Team IFC was allowed the use of the Joker with a designated rider appointed to score double points on his or her finish.
Team IFC, down six points elected to send Broc Nicol to the line as the Joker to try to even the score right off the bat in the first heat. Nicol and teammate Darren Armbruster faced some stiff competition though facing Billy Janniro and Daniel Faria in that first heat for Team Law Tigers. As the gate when up it was Janniro who played the spoiler for IFC taking control right off the line and holding the lead all the way to the finish line scoring three points for Team Law Tigers. Faria followed close behind running protection for his running mate and finishing second for two points. Armbruster finished third for one point and Nicol was not able to pick-up any points using the Joker for Team IFC. Now the score was Law Tigers 53-Team IFC 43, nearly out of reach for Team IFC.
Timmy Dion and Gregory Moore added two points each for Team Law Tigers in heats two and three. Wilbur Hancock and Anthony Dion both scored first place finishes for Team IFC in rounds two and three and Sammy Tetrault and Rees Todd added one point each for Team IFC in heats two and three also. Their efforts fell short though and the teams ended tied 9-9 for the round but when the points were added to the points coming into the championship round the score settled at Team Law Tigers 57, Team IFC 51. It was a great series and always remained close throughout the challenge sometimes tied or within one or two points after each round. All the riders did a fantastic job as team players and the event was very popular throughout the season.
Broc Nicol was again the “Fastest Man of the Night,” winning the scratch main event. The win was his seventh scratch main event win of the season. Nicol was on the throttle winning all his races in the scratch program to get to the night’s finale. Nicol got out of his gate first and was followed closely by Billy Janniro in a tight race until Janniro uncharacteristically sled into the wall coming out of turn two giving Nicol an easier go to the finish line. Wilbur Hancock was second, Dan Faria was third and Billy Janniro was fourth.
Gregory Moore picked up a main event win in the handicap program winning the handicap main event. Moore had a great night winning all his handicap program races riding off the zero line. This not the easiest position out front being the hunted not the hunter, considering every rider is out to get you and looking back is not an easy task. Anthony Dion made a last ditch effort in the final turn to catch Moore but fell short. The win was Moore’s first podium win of the season. Dion was second and Wilbur Hancock was third.
In another first this season Brandon Hendrickson won the support main event, his first main event win of the season. Hendrickson was third in both his support heat races but put it together to win the main event. With Mike Newnham leading and Sammy Tetrault in second Catherine Moore crashed in turn two and a restart was called for by Fast Fridays referee Steve Lucero. On the restart Hendrickson led followed by Newnham who was soon overtaken by Cody Aker who rode following Hendrickson to the finish line for second place. Catherine Moore was third.
Riley Rearick, running in the both the Youth 150cc D1 program and the Youth 250cc D1 division, won the Youth 150cc D1 main event. Rearick was second in his first heat race, first in his second heat race then first in the Youth 150cc D1 main event. Zander Schroeder was second and Logan Kerr was third.
Mason Howell won the Youth 150cc D2 main event, his seventh Youth 150cc D2 main event win of the season. Howell was second in his first heat race, first in his second heat race and then went on to win the main event leading from the start and winning by a comfortable margin. Gavin Evans Seeley was second and Hank Hanaway was third. In the Youth 150cc D3 program young Ryder Faria won the main event. Faria also won all his races leading to the main event. Faria, son of division one rider Dan Faria, is really getting the hang of speedway racing. Chance Farrow was second in the main event and William Bruce was third.
Jameson Hutchinson, a solid racer top finisher in the Youth 250cc D1 program, picked up his sixth main event win. Riley Rearick was second and brother Wesley Rearick was third. Caden Cavrikas won the Youth 250cc D2 main event, his third of the season. Cavrikas won all his heat races on his way to the main event. Off the line Cavrikas was in a tight race with Baylee Evans Seeley but after turn one pulled ahead to a comfortable lead he held to the finish line. Evans-Seeley finished second and Justin Gist was third.
