Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway
Auburn Ca.
Michael Kirby Story and Photos
What a great night of championship racing at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn Ca. If you were in the Gold Country Fairgrounds stadium Saturday night you were treated to not one, or two but three championship programs. Week 16 at Fast Friday’s, the second week of Saturday night racing and the third week of championship racing did not disappoint. Up for grabs was the 2025 AMA Extreme National Sidecar Championship, the 2025 AMA Youth 250cc National Championship and the 2025 Youth 150cc National Championship. The event included over 50 scratch races in the three divisions and a $1700.00 purse for the sidecar championship, a very ambitious program for sure. The staff at Fast Friday’s from the snack shack workers, administrative staff and race officials did a over the top job of presenting a great professional program.
The surprise of the evening was that eleven time AMA National Speedway Champion Billy with only limited experience on a 1100cc three-wheeled sidecar drove himself and rider Johnny Glover to the sidecar championship. It was a crowded field with 12 sidecars on the program but with the help Glover who is a very experienced rider on the back of a sidecar the pair pulled off a stunning victory. “I have driven a sidecar in a race maybe four or five times but always with a different rider and a different sidecar each time,” said Janniro after the race. Janniro is a journeyman at racing any type of motorcycle with two wheels and now three wheels on a race track as his racing record proves. He now adds and new title to his lengthy racing resume that began in 1995 at the age of 15 years old.
The format was simple, 12 sidecar teams each racing in 12 heat races of four teams each, scored points throughout the evening. Based on points, a last chance qualifier after the 12 heat races put the winning team in the final championship race with the three high points teams. Three points for a win, two points for second place, one point for a third place finish and zip for a four place finish. Most points scored deciding placement teams in the qualifier and the championship final.
The team of Emil and Eddie Ovrid made it out of the qualifier to earn a spot in the championship final and the stage was set. Lining at the start was of course Janniro and Glover, the Emil brothers, Joe Jones and Tom Summers and Wade Boyd and Eric Lindauer. As the flag went up Janniro and Glover were in the lead by the first turn but the race was on. Two of the toughest competitors on any race track were going for an national championship. Janniro/Glover were in lead but not by much. Boyd/Lindauer were inside just behind him and Jones/Summers on the outside. The racing was tight with a little bump and go between the teams. Jones and Summers were not going to go down easy and put up a great fight but Janniro and Glover held on for the win. Boyd and Lindauer slipped in just ahead of Jones and Summers for second place. Jones and Summers were third and Emil and Eddie Ovrid were fourth.
Jones and Summers have numerous national championships under their belts including the last two national championships but ran into trouble in a early heat race and had mechanical problems after a crash with another team. Jones and Summers were on borrowed bikes for the remainder of the evening including the final championship race. It was a great night of sidecar racing, and the good will and sportsmanship between racers was evident after the main event as they hugged and congratulated each other, smiles all around. No hard feeling anywhere between the sidecar teams just knowing that each team left it all on the track.
Brady Landon, a blaze all season long at Fast Friday’s won the AMA Youth 250cc national championship. The format for the Youth 250cc championship was the same as the sidecar championship. Riders scoring points and transferring to a last chance qualifier and final championship race. Finishing second last season to Darren Armbruster in the championship this year he would not be denied. Landon 15, was perfect all night as he had been all season winning all his races for a perfect night.
Landon scored 12 points going into the national final and faced Jameson Hutchinson who came into the final just one point behind Landon with 11 points, Wesley Rearick with seven points and Caden Cavrikas who earned a spot in the championship final by winning the last chance qualifier grabbed the last spot. The race was predictable with Landon turning in another flawless race for the win, followed by Hutchinson in second place, Cavrikas in third and Rearick was fourth.
Young Mason Howell 10, in his first year of speedway racing took home the biggest trophy in the Youth 150cc championship winning his division. In the AMA Youth 150cc championship points were scored as in the other championships but the riders were seeded in two semi-final races with the riders with the most points after the semi-finals going into the final championship race.
In the final was Mason Howell, Hudson Jones, Zander Schroeder and with a perfect night and 15 points defending Youth 150cc champ Riley Rearick. As the tapes went up and in turn one Rearick clipped the rear wheel of Howell and both the riders went down. Referee Steve Lucero had to make the hard call and excluded Rearick for causing the mishap from the race and the championship. On the restart Howell took the lead and held on for the win. Zander was second and Hudson Jones was third. A great race but a tough break for Rearick.
Coming up at Fast Friday’s the championship racing continues with the Speedway’s Best Pairs Championship on Saturday September 13. There will be no races on Saturday September 6 during the Gold Country Fair.
